Member Spotlight: National Midwives Association of Uganda
This month, we shine a spotlight on the National Midwives Association of Uganda (NMAU), a professional body dedicated to supporting midwives across Uganda and strengthening the quality of care provided to mothers, newborns, and children.
At its heart, the Association brings together midwives with a shared mission: to continually build knowledge and skills that enable them to deliver the highest standard of care. Through conferences, webinars, professional development opportunities, and peer learning, NMAU supports both the clinical excellence and wellbeing of its members.
Key Initiatives in the Field of Resilience - Putting Midwives at the Centre

The National Midwives Association of Uganda brings together midwives from across the country with a shared commitment to excellence in care. Through conferences, presentations, webinars, and continuous professional development opportunities, the Association works to equip its members with the knowledge and skills they need to provide high-quality care to every mother, newborn, and child they serve.
Beyond clinical practice, NMAU also recognises the importance of supporting the wellbeing of midwives and advocating for better working conditions, ensuring that those who care for others are themselves supported.
Central to this work is the philosophy of midwifery, which the Association considers a critical foundation of its resilience agenda. This philosophy emphasises compassionate, respectful, woman-centred care, professional excellence, and a deep commitment to supporting mothers, newborns, and families through some of life's most important moments. By staying connected to these core values, midwives strengthen their sense of purpose and resilience, even in challenging circumstances.
For NMAU, resilience starts with continuous learning and mutual support. The Association regularly organises webinars and conferences focused on topics such as self-care, emotional wellbeing, soft skills, and compassionate care practices.
These initiatives create opportunities for reflection, peer learning, and professional growth, helping midwives navigate the challenges of their work while maintaining their commitment to quality care. Together with the philosophy of midwifery, they form a strong foundation for sustaining both individual and collective resilience within the profession.
Common Resilience Practice Regularly Followed
A common resilience practice embraced by the Association is a steadfast commitment to respectful maternal care. Members continually encourage one another to remain knowledgeable, passionate, and dedicated to the profession of midwifery.
No matter the challenges they encounter, they remain guided by their core mission of caring for mothers, newborns, and children with dignity, compassion, and respect. This shared purpose serves as a powerful source of resilience and motivation.
Involvement with the Resilience Collaborative
The National Midwives Association of Uganda has become an active and valued partner within The Resilience Collaborative community. NMAU members played important roles in the myTRC Leadership Cohort, contributing their experience, insights, and leadership to conversations on strengthening professional networks and supporting health workers.
The Association also worked closely with cohort members to develop practical and sustainable solutions aimed at strengthening NMAU's membership and expanding its reach among midwives across Uganda. This spirit of collaboration reflects a shared commitment to building stronger, more connected professional communities.
Beyond leadership development, NMAU regularly partners with TRC on advocacy initiatives that champion the wellbeing of midwives and health workers. Together, these efforts help elevate conversations around workforce resilience, supportive working conditions, and the critical role of midwives in strengthening healthcare systems, both in Uganda and globally.
Through these collaborations, NMAU continues to demonstrate its commitment to collective action, learning, and advancing the wellbeing of the health workforce.
Looking to the Future
When asked about their aspirations as members of TRC, the response was simple yet powerful: to be change agents.

The National Midwives Association of Uganda envisions a future where midwives are empowered, supported, and recognised for the vital role they play in strengthening health systems and improving health outcomes. Through continued learning, collaboration, and advocacy, they are helping shape that future every day.
Their story is a reminder that resilience is not only about overcoming challenges. It is about staying connected to purpose, supporting one another, and continuing to care with compassion, even in the most demanding circumstances.
